Description :

A concert of Coptic sacred music celebrating the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

The title of the concert, 'The Anointed Servant', is taken from Luke 4:16-21: 'And He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day...and stood up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. Jesus opened the book and found the place in Isaiah 61:1-3 where it is written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because the Lord has anointed Me and sent Me to preach good tidings to the poor.' And He began to say to them "Today this scripture is fulfilled." The 'Anointed One' in Hebrew is 'Mashiach', from which we derive the word 'Messiah'.

The music is taken from the Coptic liturgical year and the music will be sung in a mixture of the original Coptic language, Greek (as some hymns are shared with the Greek Orthodox Church), English and French (since some of the choir members have come from Paris). The music and lyrics of the hymns are very ancient, dating from the earliest days of Christianity and the music of a few hymns have even been traced by archaeologists to the days of the Pharaohs.

The concert is presented by the St Kyrel Trust, a charity registered in the UK since 1995. The St Kyrel Trust supports disadvantaged Egyptian secondary school and university students to enable them to obtain a basic education up to first degree level. The Trust has so far enabled 750 students to graduate and progress to a professional career and is currently supporting over 800 students through very difficult times in Egypt. Please bring friends and family and encourage others to support this very worthwhile cause.
