Rennes is pleased to host the next Metropolitan Areas Working Group of Economic Development Forum of Eurocities You are kindly invited to take part in our discussions focusing on the topics of functional urban areas and the urban-rural linkage issues.

As you know, those issues are currently considered of interest by DG Regio and Urban as well as the European Parliament and the OECD.

When it comes to tackle urban sprawl, territorial cohesion, and even economic growth our cities have to lead sustainable urban development strategies beyond their boundaries, through an integrated approach. The Metropolitan Areas Working Group of Eurocities has been working for 2 years now on these issues. The first output was the release of the background paper “Cities cooperating beyond their boundaries: evidence through experience in Europe Cities”. Alongside, it has a broad collection on functional urban ares all over Europe.

The metropolitan area of Rennes has been chosen by the European Commission to be a case study of OECD, considering its balanced development model through the Archipelago City concept.

This meeting aims at presenting the French intermunicipal cooperation which is enabled by law but provides different models from one territory to another.

By organizing this meeting, we really expect to be fruitful to Eurocities work, research and advocacy on the following issues like : how can be defined a win-win partnership? Can  the cooperation between cities be considered as engine economic growth?

Please note that English and French will be the main working languages.

We'd be most happy to welcome you in Rennes

Best regards
